When guests arrive in numbers, a house warms up faster than anyone expects. Extra people, open doors, cooking and conversation all add to the heat and the noise. Pets feel that change just as much as you do, and often more. A second bowl of fresh water is one of the simplest ways to look after them.
Put the extra bowl away from the main gathering, where the dog or cat can drink in peace. A pet will not go near water if it has to walk through a crowd. A quiet corner of the kitchen or a shaded spot in the hall often works well. Choose a bowl that will not tip over if someone brushes past.
Keeping an eye on the bowls
Water left standing in a warm room soon feels stale, so look at the bowls now and then. Tip out what is left and refill with fresh water whenever you pass. Guests sometimes drop crumbs or other bits in a bowl without noticing. A quick rinse keeps things pleasant and lets the animals drink without hesitation.
Tell your guests where the bowls are and why they are there. Most people are happy to help once they know, and some will even offer to refill them. Ask them not to move the bowls to a different corner, since the pet will look for them in the usual place. That small conversation saves a good deal of confusion later.
A busy house is tiring for an animal, and a quiet bowl of water can also serve as a small refuge. If the dog keeps returning to its spot, let it rest there without interruption. A cat that slips away to a shelf or a bedroom is doing the same thing. Respect those choices, and make sure fresh water is close by.
When the party is over, take a moment to check that every bowl is clean and full. The house will cool down, but the animals may still be a little excited. Give them a calm evening, with the usual routine and no more surprises. A little extra care on a busy day goes a long way.
